Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Production of Leyland 98 Series-engined Freighters between 11 and 16 tonnes GVW has ended and, as expected the Cummins 5.9 litre B Series engine has replaced the 98 Series and become the standard power unit for all Leyland trucks from 6 to 16 tonnes GVW.

In the new lightweight Freighter range the six cylinder B Series is offered at three power ratings — 97kW (naturally aspirated), 108 and 119kW (turbocharged). Leyland designates these engines 302, 310 and 311 respectively.

Three downplated derivatives of the new Freighter range will also be available — the 15.16 at 15,000kg, and the 13.13 and 13.16 plated at 11,920kg.

One of the advantages of the Cummins B Series engine over the Leyland engine it replaces is its high power-toweight ratio. Leyland says that on average the kerb weights of the new lightweight Freighters are 50kg less than earlier models.

No changes have been made to the chassis or transmission, the naturally aspirated engine drives through a Dana Spicer 15 300 five speed gearbox while the higher torque engines drive through a ZF 56 36 six speed box — but all the new models are fitted with a tachometer as standard.

Prices have been increased by between six and eight per cent. Retail price of the 11.15 chassis cab for example, is 217,850 while the 16.16 carries a price tag of 222,650.

The heavier, 16 tonne Freighter with heftier chassis frame will continue to be offered with the Leyland 6.54 litre 400 Series engine for the time being, but it seems likely that this could be replaced by the charge-cooled version of the six-cylinder B Series, as used by ERF in its new 16 tonner.
