Scammell trailer which is 15 years old Although the tractive unit was new in May 1966 it is of the old type with straight-through hydraulic brakes. How will this outfit measure up to the new regulations in January 1968?
A It is virtually impossible to say if a par
ticular outfit will meet the braking requirements which come into effect on January 1 next year, without an actual road test. However, it is possible that your artic will meet the 40 per cent service brake requirement and 15 per cent secondary which will be for the ha ndbrake in your case.
However, it will be necessary to modify the semi-trailer if the full requirements of 50 per cent and 25 per cent respectively are to be attained—this will be necessary at some time in the early 1970s.
