"THE SCOTTISH Co-operative Whole sale Society Ltd., Glasgow, was called before the Scottish. deputy Licensing Authority in Inverness on Tuesday under Section 178 in connection with the maintenance of vehicles operated under C licence at their depots at Inverness and Stornoway.
The action was taken following an examination of the vehicles at their depots earlier this year when out of the 17 vehicles examined six immediate and three delayed prohibitions notices were issued.
It was admitted by the firm that there had been neglect in the past but it said that 'efforts were being made to have things put right.
A policy had been laid down now where by all depots would be visited every eight weeks by a mechanic from Glasgow to ensure that a proper standard of vehicle maintenance was being kept throughout the area. Depot mechanics would make a dayto-day inspection. It was submitted that the troubles had arisen through the fleet being spread over a wide area without central control.
Mr. Wells said that he could see no sign of any attempt being made at proper maintenance control now or in the future. He suspended the six vehicles, which had been the subject of immediate prohibitions, for 12 months.
e At the same inquiry Mr. Wells called Highland Bakeries, Inverness also under Section 178 in connection with maintenance of their vehicles authorized under C licence.
The firm had appeared before him earlier this year when three vehicles had been suspensed for one month. A recent fleet inspection had shown no improvement and this was the reason for their being called again.
It was submitted that the firm was now in liquidation and that the vehicles were to be sold.
Mr. Wells revoked the licence completely.
