BYemploying a Perkins 510 V8 diesel engine for the Maxim tractive unit, the makers Dennis Bros. Ltd., Guildford, have been enabled to uprate the unit from 28 to 30 tons gross, it is announced today. The Maxim was introduced at the 1964 Commercial Motor Show with a rating of 32 tons and was later derated, the original power unit being a Cummins Vale.

While the unladen weight of the machine. fully equipped with power steering, automatic chassis lubrication, 60 gal. fuel tank and so on is 4 tons 15 cwt. 3 qtrs., Dennis says that for taxation purposes this could readily be reduced to 4 tons 10 cwt.

In a typical application the new Maxim caters for a payload of upwards of 21 tons and is also suitable for use with older types of unplated 24ton gross two-axle trailer or with a plated singleaxle 24-tonner.

The Perkins 510 has a maximum output of 170 b.h.p. and a torque rating of 390 lb. ft., and claimed acceleration rates include a rate of 0 to 20 m.p.h. in 22 sec., 0 to 30 m.p.h. in 43.5 sec. and 0 to 40 m.p.h. in 90.5 sec. An overall fuel consumption of around 8.5 m.p.g. has been regularly achieved on normal running.

Mirror Safety: A proposal that internal glass mirrors in all new motor vehicles should be framed with injury-reducing material has been circulated by the Minister of Transport to interested organizations. If approved, it would apply to all new vehicles registered on or after April 1 1969.
