AVERAGE weekly earnings of transport and

communications workers have gone up 218.6 per cent in the past 18 years, it is announced in the quarterly publication of the General Federation of Trades Unions.

In October 1948, the average man got £6 Ils ld while in October last year, he got £20 17s 8d a week.

The number of hours worked each week has risen over the same period by 4.6 per cent from 48.1 to 50.3.

In all the industries in the country, wages rose 194.4 per cent, while hours worked dropped 1.5 per cent. The average worker earned 120 6s Id for 46 hours work at the end of last year.

Statistics are provided by the Ministry of Labour.
