What the North-Western Licensing Authority calls the thorny problem of coal carrying ". came up in a new aspect at an inquiry in Manchester, last Friday.

Messrs. Currie Bros., of Station Yard, Irlam, Manchester, finding their B-licence Vehicle wholly occupied on the transport of coal for' hire or reward, bought another for• their own business (chiefly coal) and sought its transfer from the C to the B category. For the railway it was contended that the clause as to Contract A licences should be invoked.

The Authority pointed out to the railway representative that if the vehicle were put on contract, it would not be limited to railhead coal collection within a radius of 10 miles, but could go anywhere. In this instance, it was better that Messrs. Currie Bros., who were content with their local area, should remain in the B category.

Application was granted.
