We much regret to learn of the sudden death, last Saturday, of Mr. Howard Stephens, joint managing director of the Cathedral Garage, Ltd., Bristol, and of the Metropole Garage, Delinehead. Mr. Stephens was the son of Mr. George Stephens, of Stephens, Bestow and Co., Ltd. Born in Bristol in 1879, he commenced in his father's concern, in the building trade, joining the motor industry in 1905, later running his own business and amalgamating, in 1919, with F. G. Fox and Co. to form the present concerns.

Carriage of Fish Rivalry.

At Aberdeen, last week, Mr. Henry Riches, Northern Scotland Licensing Authority, in spite of railway opposition, renewed the A licence of Mr. D. R. Stewart, 1, Brimmond Place, Aberdeen, for the carriage of fish to Liverpool and London.

Mr. Stewart stated that, when he obtained his licence two years ago, he was conveying general goods in the counties of Aberdeen, Banff, Kincar

dine and sometimes Inverness. He also carried fish occasionally to Liverpool. He was still transporting fish to Liverpool twice a week and-to London once a week, the latter work being subcontracted out to other operators.

For the L.M.S. and L.N.E. Railway companies, it was claimed that there were ample facilities for conve3rini fish south by rail and that the applicant had changed the character of his work, which was now mainly long-distance transport.

Giving his decision to grant the application, the Licensing Authority said that three reasons had weighed with him. Mr. Stewart had for a long time been in business as a carrier. When he made his first application he stated that he was carrying fish to Liverpool, and he was still engaged on the same work, but to a larger extent and to more distant places. There was, moreover, no direct evidence that he had taken traffic from other hauliers, or from the railways.
