• Cumbria Police are appealing for witnesses after a mechanic was seriously injured by a truck in a hit-and-run accident in Gretna.

The incident happened at around 4.30am on 21 February on the A74(M) close to the Springfield turn-oft The mechanic was struck by the truck as he was attending to a broken-down vehicle. He is still in hospital suffering from a ruptured spleen and kidney, among other injuries.

A spokesman for Dumfnes and Galloway Constabulary says: "The vehicle involved was a large white Renault truck or van, which would have sustained damage to the near side. Anyone with information should call Lockerbie police."
