THE GOVERNMENT should be careful that it really does what the public wants when it imposes environmental restrictions on the lorry, Freight Transport Association planning and traffic services controller Richard Turner told a seminar last weekend.
Mr Turner, who was speaking at London University, said that public disquiet with lorries has increased in spite of a reduction in the number of accidents involving lorries, the introduction of the tachograph, and the Certificate of Professional Competence.
Similarly, he said that roads and by-passes have been improved, yet the perceived reaction of the public has been that the problem has got worse.
He cautioned the Government to be sure that it is taking the best action before going ahead with sideguards and quiet heavy lorries.
