Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

MAGIRUS-Deutz has fallen on hard times, reports our Brussels correspondent.

The firm built 1,927 buses in 1980 but with orders down by 41 per cent last year only 1,145 vehicles were built and there are fears that the bus works at Mainz which employs 1,600 people may be closed.

The lorry side of the business was nearly as badly hit by the recession — new registrations of Magirus-Deutz lorries were down by 35 per cent last year.

Union officials and some executives blame the company's troubles on Fiat, which took over Magirus-Deutz seven years ago as part of the IVECO conglomerate. Its use of Fiat parts in Magirus-Deutz vehicles led to complaints from some customers.
