THE GENERAL Council of British Shipping is against any farm of lorry weight restriction in the London area, said Michael Graham, chairman of the Inland Transport Committee of the GCBS.
The Council is the representative body of the British shipping industry, in particular the container services operators. It is these container operators that would be most affected by a ban, Mr Graham explained, as road transport represents a major part of the through transport services.
"The door-to-door delivery scheme has resulted in radical changes in the pattern of freight transport, so that GCBS mem-bers are now road transport operators in their own right."
There would be few, if any, economic advantages as a result of bans, he thought. It costs about £60 for one container movement in the South East. "If the goods had to be delivered in two 16 ton vehicles, the cost might rise to about £110, an increase of £50 for each container load of goods," he calculated.
