Brussels Show

From John F. Moon

THREE large halls filled with commercial vehicles from eight countries stimulate plenty of interest at this year's Brussels Salon de l'Automobile which opened on Wednesday after being delayed for a week because of the Belgian political situation. The Salon closes on January 29 and, as usual, provides the hest chance in' Europe of seeing the latest American goods vehicles,

The most interesting new model from the U.S.A. this time is the Chevrolet Corvair 95 rear-engined forward-control van. This uses components from the " compact " car of the same name and has tairly restrained styling for a a American design.

A brand-new exhibit is the Dutch D.A.F. 6-cwt. pick-up based on tho D.A.F. private car. Like the car, the pick-up has Voriomatic belt-driven automatic transmission. D.A.F. are showing a second new design—a maximumcapacity, tandem-axle van semi-trailer, with all-aluminiurn integral construction.

New Brossel Models

The only Belgian manufacturer represented is Brossel, who, as described on page 864, have developed new goods and passenger models. One of their new passenger-chassis exhibits is a rearengined model with Pirelli-Saga air springs used in conjunction with semielliptic leaf springs.

F.N. and Miesse, both of whom exhibited last year, have cried-off this time. F.N. obviously at the last moment, for their name is included in the official catalogue. Nevertheless, French, German and Italian heavy vehicles are very much in evidence, and the large stand areas occupied by most of these manufacturers suggest that favourable Common Market prices are making Belgium an even more attractive market for such concerns.

The regrettable' absence of all-British heavy-vehicle makers, except Leyland, is making it look to Belgian eyes as if we have already withdrawn from the unequal struggle.
