Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

V8 petrol engine of a fork-lift truck to operate on liquified petroleum gas? The engine is an American Ford unit that was originally fitted to a pick-up.

Is 1.p.g. taxed and would it be permissible to convert the petrol engine of a vehicle. used on the road? The purpose of the exercise would be to reduce fuel costs.

AYou do not state whether you have

claimed the rebate on the fuel you use for your fork-lift truck, which you are entitled to do if it is employed for works and/or interworks transport. If you are using rebated fuel the fuel-cost advantage of converting to I.p.g., which is untaxed, could be minimal, but it is notable that operating on gas should increase the life of the engine between overhauls because it virtually eliminates contamination of the lubricating oil.

Conversion of the engine of a road-vehicle to run on I.p.g. is currently allowed without incurring a tax liability. It is understood, however, that the oil companies will not supply I.p.g. for this purpose.

It may be of interest that the compression ratio of a petrol engine can normally be raised by one or more ratios if I.p.g. is used as a fuel. This should afford an improvement in fuel consumption.
