For the City oY London Corporation.

The St. Pancras Iron Work Co., Ltd., of 171, St. Pancras Road, London, NW., has received an order from the Corporation of the City of London for two steam vehicles with interchangeable water-tank and dust-collecting bodies, and gotiating the congested streets t•-, of the City and

' with an ordinary wagon, a departure has been . made from the usual practice in *^giving the lock an exceptionally wide steering • angle; another

feature is that the 4-wheel base has

been reduced to • ,: $ft. 2111. A two

cylinder cornrpound engine is II. used. The dia

meterof the h.p.

cylinder is 4in.,

14 whilst that of the

) I.p. is tin., both

cylinders having i a common stroke 00; of bin. The Stephenson type of Vertical section of boiler. link valve motion is used, it being argued that this form is known to nearly all mechanics and is easy of repair at any time when found ileceary. The crankshaft is turned up from a steel forging, and has balance weights attached for the prevention of vibration. One end of the crankshaft carries a mild steel pillion which meshes with a fixed gear wheel on the end of the countershaft, which at the other end is squared and fitted with two sliding gear wheels. Either of these wheels can be intermeshed with one of two gears belted round the differential box on the rear shaft. The final transmission is by roller chains irom the differential to the back wheels. Having regard to the possible risk of missing gear on a hill and running backwards, the wagon is made with the change-speed lever at the side of the engine bed, which arrangement makes it compulsory for the driver to turn off steam and stop the wagon before altering the ratio. The whole of the engine and gearing is enclosed in a cast-iron oil-retaining engine bed, and all parts of the mechanism are automatically lubricated. The boiler is of the vertical lire-tube type, the upper part of the shell being readily detachable. The fire-box tube plate is crowned to minimise the settling of deposit, and five cleaning plugs are so disposed that all parts of the boiler can be thoroughly washed out. The steering gear is of the Ackermann type, and all pins are case-hardened_ and ground to a fit. Two feed water tanks are carried; one forms the driver's seat and the other is part of the bunker. The over all size of the wagon is 6ft. bin, wide by 5ft. gin. long. The front road wheels are 2ft. gin. in diameter, the back ones being 31t. sin. in diameter. We compliment the St. Pancras Iron Work Co., Ltd., on the reception of this order. 44)1i.i1:11
