MERCEDES-BENZ has revealed details of a new aero trailer concept, which boasts 18% less wind resistance and nearly 5% less fuel consumption than a traditional trailer.
The savings are achieved by taking an integrated approach to the tractor and trailer unit, which the German manufacturer says can considerably cut fuel consumption while simultaneously reducing emissions from the tractor unit.
A series of features contribute to the trailer saving
2,000 litres of diesel and more than five tonnes of CO2 on an average HGV’s mileage of 150,000km a year. These include a front airdam; side trim panels; and a tapering rear end, featuring folding elements to allow easy access to the load compartment.
The aero trailer’s load compartment remains unaffected, but the unit’s length does exceed current legal requirements by approximately 500mm.
