An updated National Infrastructure Plan, including details of 35 road and rail schemes, was also published, with the Chancellor stating that the UK needs “uncongested roads to move products”. The plan, which lists 500 infrastructure projects valued at £250bn to be built over the next decade, will require backing from the private sector, including UK pension funds. Other funding methods include road tolls and granting local authorities more freedom on how they use local tax receipts.
Headline improvements include managed motorway schemes for the M3 and M6, improvements to the M1/M6 at Junction 19, funding the A14 Kettering Bypass, widening the A453, funding the A45/46 Tollbar End improvement scheme, and building a new dual carriageway linking the M56 at Manchester Airport to the A6 south of Stockport. Major projects planned on the M25 and the M1 will be accelerated.
