Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Keep hydrated by drinking plenty of water or well-diluted squashes rather than fizzy, sugary drinks.

• Ensure steady energy release throughout the day by eating nuts, seeds and good-quality muesli bars instead of chocolate and other sugary snacks.

• Eat plenty of fresh, colourful fruit and vegetables to meet the body’s needs for vitamins and minerals that help keep you alert and responsive.

• Include some protein foods such as meat, poultry, fish, eggs, seeds and nuts with every meal and snack to maintain energy levels.

• Avoid regular daily slumps in energy (often around 4pm for day workers) by taking meal breaks just beforehand, eating some protein with salad and vegetables instead of wheat-based foods.

These tips, compiled by nutritional therapist Jane Nelson of the British Association for Applied Nutrition & Nutritional Therapy, are designed to maintain drivers’ energy levels, concentration and ability to react quickly.
