Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

HE TURBOCHARGED Fiat 170.30 will be available for British perators from October 8, reports GRAHAM MONTGOMERIE.

It is plated at 44 tonnes gcw, nd is the first turbo-charged ehicle from the IVECO range to e offered in the UK.

Although the name "Fiat" was onspicuously absent during the ress presentation, the new ehicle used a derivative of the 4-litre (854cuin) Fiat six-cylin er engine used in the 170.26 for he past few years. The air ooled "Magirus" version is expected later.

The engine develops 223kW '299bhp) at 2,000rpm, thus makng IVECO another convert to the ow-maximum rated speed :heory. Maximum torque is 1,325Nm (977 lbft) at 1,200 with torque rise of 24 per cent. This as resulted in a usable speed pand between 1,1 5 0 and 1,750rpm for maximum ecolomy, Compared with the naturally )spirated version, the inlet talves are reduced in diameter )nd have 60° seats instead of 15°. The cylinder-head bolts lave been increased by 2mm up o 18mm in diameter and other lifferences include a revised de;ign of piston bowl and an in;rease in heat exchanger cepa;ity.

The drive is taken through a 400mm (161/21n) single-plate Fichtel and Sachs clutch to a Fuller RTO 5913 gearbox. The choice of gearbox has been made partly for rationalisation reasons in that the V8-powered machine made the use of the nine-speed box rather marginal. IVECO is currently Fuller's biggest European customer.

The ratio spread is from a 12.5 to 1 crawler to an 0.87 overdrive top. The rear angle is the familiar IVECO hub reduction design which has an 111/2-tonne capacity and is available with a choice of ratios; 3.96 or 4.26 to 1. With the higher ratio, the top speed is 111km/h (69mph) with a rolling start gradeability of 1 in 2.7. The 4.26 ratio gives (64mph) and 1 in 2.5.

When cruising at the legal motorway speed limit, the high axle ratio gives an engine speed of 1,740rpm still in the maximum economy band. The lower ratio gives a speed just outside this area at 1.870rpm.

On the suspension side, IVECO uses long multi-leaf springs in preference to the parabolic type, with telescopic dampers and anti-roll bars on both axles.

IVECO is quite comphehensive in what is included in the kerbweight specification with the result that at first glance the vehicle looks heavy. The IVECO definition of kerb weight, however, includes a full tank of fuel (400 litres or 88 gal) driver and catwalk. Thus the weight of the 170.30 at 6.87 tonnes (6 tons 15 cwt) is not quite as disastrous as it would first appear particularly as this is for a sleeper-cab chassis. (The new IVECO is not available in day-cab form).

The cab itself now has a fivepoint mounting and can be tilted to 60°. There are rubber mounts at the front and coil spring-inrubber side supports plus a cen tral rear mounting.

The turbocharged chass known as the "Third Generati tractor" in IVECO terminolo. was launched for the Europe market in April of this year an. currently being produced at rate of 1,000 per month.

The brakes are Rockw Stopmaster twin-wedge, t leading-shoe, with a drum die eter of 380mm (15in) and a st width of 178mm (7in) all rou Automatic air system drainagi incorporated and anti-fret equipment is standard.

The official price list for • IVECO/Fiat 170.30 at the time its official launch on Octobe will be £27,500. There is a tv year warranty on the drive-I components.
