THE AFTERNOON session o the first day of the CPT confe ence heard a speech by E manno Minoni of Aziend Trasporti Municipale, Milan.

Speaking on "mass trans operators and the problem energy," Mr Minoni told the co ference that ATM is the sol operator in the uban area of M Ian which has a population about 0.7m. Its fleet comprise 1000 single-deck buses, 80 tro ley buses, 600 trams and tw underground lines.

According to Mr Minoni, ther are two basic problems for th public transport operator — t take timely measures t conserve energy and to ensur the future of public transport b diversifying away from oil a much as possbile.

In Milan, with a daily averag occupancy co-efficiency of 1. for private cars and 24 for buse the consumption per passeng in a car is nearly 3.5 times that i a public service vehicle and peak hours this ratio may b doubled. Thus, if 10 per cent the total passenger miles wer transferred to public transpo the energy saving would b similar to the total national con sumption of energy on loca public transport. This is the mos important way in which energ could be saved, claimed Mr Mi noni.
