nBSERVATIONS on the comparative

merits of trams, motorbuses and trolleybuses were given by Mr. E. R. L. Fitzpayne, general manager of Glasgow Transport Department, in a report to the transport committee. An analysis of costs and earnings revealed that the motorbuses, which had the lowest cost per mile of the three types of machine, suffered the heaviest deficit per mile.

Part of the reason was that the motorbuses had a higher minimum fare and tended to be less heavily loaded than the other vehicles. The cost of repairs and maintenance was greatest for the trams, which had a high average age. The trolleybuses, most of which were new, were the cheapest in this connection.

The ideal vehicle for use in the city was one with a large overload capacity for peak-hour operation. Mr. Fitz

payne thought that the double-decker was not the most suitable. He recommended that 450 old trams be abandoned as soon as possible and said that future transport policy should depend upon the department's power station at Pinkstosn. Because it produced cheap current, the electric vehicle had advantages over oil-engined types.

A MAGNETIC DRAIN PLUG

A MAGNETIC drain plug which 1-1, arrests the circulation of ferrous particles in the lubricating oil, is being marketed in this country by Parion Products, Ltd., Parion House, Witham, Essex. Whilst the idea is not new, it is claimed that this device, which is known as the Chip, is made of a material which will retain its magnetic properties indefinitely.

Plugs are available for practically every make of vehicle, being made to replace the existing drain plugs in the engine, gearbox and back axle.

GOOD PACKING SAVES CLAIMS

" GOOD-QUALITY packing material is half the battle. Avoid the temp

tation to .` make do' with old and unsuitable containers—it is more expensive in the Tong run." This advice to consignors is given in a , leaflet on package protection issued by the Road Haulage Executive to customers with their accounts.

It gives many hints on how the risk 328 of damage to goods in transit may be reduced and states that the most important causes of delay or non-delivery are incorrect addresses and loss of labels. The leaflet has been prepared as part of a drive to cut down the number of claims.

NEW ANTI-GLARE GLASS

nESIGNED to minimize the glare

and heat of the sun, a new type of safety glass called Sundym is being manufactured by the Triplex Safety Glass Co., Ltd. Made in various forms, laminated and toughened, curved and flat, the glass is tinted light green. It absorbs heat without unduly reducing light transmission.

In the form supplied for windscreens, the glass is shaded, at the top to a depth of 4 ins. or 5 ins. The top is dark green and the colouring is reduced towards the centre of the pane until it becomes the normal shade. Transmission of visible light is high, but much of the near infra-red radiation is absorbed.

At the-Commercial Motor Showlhis month, a number of coachbnilders will be exhibiting coaches in which Sundym glass has been used for windscreen panels, roof lights and quarter lights.
