• Government plans for a network of remote Scottish coastal "superquarries" to help with the supply of aggregates to England could seriously damage Southeast tipper businesses, industry experts fear.
Under the proposal millions of tonnes of aggregates produced by the superquarries would be transported in container ships to ports in the South-east, for final distribution by road, rail and barge. But John Hills, transport manager with Sevenoaks-based tipper operator Hugh Lavers Transport, is worried that this move could lead to the work being snapped up by major operators at the expense of smaller tipper operators.
Miles Fox, chairman of the RHA tipper group, warns that if quarries are closed in England because of Scottish super quarries, the effect on tipper operators would be devastating.
