• The Dodd's Group has increased its fleet by a third with the acquisition of Turnshire Transport, a Wiltshire-based operator which was formed to take over the customer base of defunct Syms Brothers Transport.

The Southall-based group, which owns Dodd's Transport, Parker Haulage and 21st Century Logistics, has taken over 50 trucks, 80 trailers, a rented depot at Caine and a £4m order book.

Dodd's has bought the busi

ness from Westward Commercials, the Avonmouth-based Volvo dealer which formed Turnshire Transport in June. It had taken over 25-year-old family firm Syms Brothers which went into liquidation with Ernst & Young four days later.

Westward wanted to keep the business alive because it had the £300,000-a-year contract to maintain Syms' fleet.

About 50 drivers and six office staff have been taken on by Dodd's, which is operating the business as Syms of Caine.

The acquisition gives Dodd's a foothold in the West Country; it also has depots in Sheffield, Telford, South Wales, Harlow and Southall.
