hen Alan Miles' Mercedes-Benz 1729 tractor was stolen from Malvern last week he hoped that the thieves were only interested in the load of 20 tonnes of cider, and that turned out to be the case.

The tractor and curtain-sided trailer belonging to Miles Transport Services were stolen between 19:00hrs on 1 November and 04:00hrs the following morning. The other eight vehicles in the company's Malvern Link yard were not touched and the artic was recovered three days later when an Oldbury businessman phoned to complain that it was blocking his premises.

The only damage was a broken steering lock, but there was no trace of the 22 pallets of cider, branded with the Asda and Bulmers logos.

"The cider was worth about El 2,000 which was considerably less than the vehicle, so I'm pleased it worked out that way round," says Miles. "It's still a shame about the drink though."
