Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

ANEW type of nickel-cadmium battery which is said to have a life of up to 20 years, has been introduced in America by the Sonotone Corporation. The cells used in the battery have plates of sintered nickel powder, the electrolyte being potassium hydroxide, which is an alkali.

The nickel powder is formed into thirl . sheets, structural support being given by fine-wire mesh. Grids of this type are used for both the positive and negative plates

The active material of the positive plates, when charged, is nickel oxide, and of the negative plates, cadmium. Cell cases of lightweight polystyrene are used.

In initial cost, the Sonotone battery is estimated to be from two to five times that of a good lead-acid battery. Amongst the tests which this battery has undergone, one of the most severe was to freeze it in a block of ice, cables being led away from it to a vehicle engine, which was repeatedly started.
