uFFECT is given to some of the

recommendations of the Thesiger Committee in the Transport Charges (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill, which was introduced in the House of Commons on Tuesday.

Among other things, it empowers the Licensing Authorities to control fares charged on road passenger services run by " independent " statutory undertakings (not forming part of the British Transport Commission) or by "independent " undertakings whose fares arc regulated by agreements having statutory effect. The Authorities will he free to fix fares without reference to any statutory limit, Any fares not determined in this way are to be such as the operators think fit, Trolleybus and tram fares are brought within the purview of the Licensing Authorities. • The Minister is authorized to make regulations governing the number of seated and standing passengers in motorbuses, trolleybuses and trams.

OBJECTOR COMPLAINS OF INEFFICIENCY

WHEN Messrs. Hargreaves and VV Bibbins applied to the Yorkshire Licensing Authority, in Sheffield, for a licence to operate a service between Wombwell and Houghton Colliery, a representative of the colliery said: " We feel it could be more efficient if Hargreaves and Bibbins were no longer eoncerned in the service."

The spokesman, Mr. A. E. Fisher, said there had been dissatisfaction about the irregular running of the buses for some time. The other operator, Mr. Dan Smith, had done all he could to make buses available,

Mr. H. Hargreaves said their only vehicle was taken off the road by a vehicle examiner, but it was now ready to be certified. "We hire what vehicles we can, but that is unsatisfactory," he said.

The Authority, who reserved his decision on the licence application, granted permission to Mr. Smith to increase his fares.

MAYTHORN ESSAY COMPETMON

THE subject of this year's Maythorn essay competition, arranged by the Institute of British Carriage and Automobile Manufacturers, 50 Pall Mall, London, S.W.1, is the possibilities of the use of glass-fibre reinforced plastics in body production. Entries have to be submitted by July 31. Prizes of £25, £15 and £10 are offered.

LONDON TRANSPORT'S 800s ANEW series of bus-route numbers, in the 800s, is being introduced next month in London Transport's outer country areas. Apart from the post-war change of Green Line routes from letters to numbers, this will be the first time a new series has been intro

duced since the rationalization of route numbering in 1934-35. There are no further.numbers in the present country area 300 and 400 series available for new services in housing estates and new towns.

COMBINED REAR LIGHT AND REFLECTOR

A DEVICE which would remove the et need for carrying reflectors as separate components, has been provisionally protected by Mr. H. C. E.

Dodman, 345 Leigham Court Road, Streatham, London, S,W,16. The idea is based on the use of a double-purpose glass in the rear lamp:

It is proposed to arrange the reflector portion round the outer edge and to leave the centre of the glass plain for the normal rear light. These glasses would be so made as to take the place of existing ones without material a iterations.
