• The Metropolitan police have decided to get tough with the 350,000 vans and cars which park illegally in central London every day, by towing away more vehicles.
Police estimate that between 500 and 600 vans and cars will be towed away every day, with a further 750 clamped.
Three vehicle recovery contractors will carry out the work under police supervision, including Vehicle Removal Services, whose lorries are fitted with cranes which can lift up to four tonnes.
Computers are being installed in the recovery hauliers' lorries to store an offending car's registration, the area, and details of the offence.
