Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

I NTENDED particularly for tractors, cranes, excavators, • earth moving machinery and similar equipment, sintered metal and cerametallic friction materials are now being produced by Ferodo, Ltd. A full-scale plant has been constructed at the company's works at Chapel-en-le-Frith, its design having been evolved in co-operation with the S. K. Wellman Co. of America.

Whilst the new products will not replace the asbestos-based forms, they will assist in facilitating the provision of clutches of a capacity beyond the conventional scope.

Several standard specifications of sintered metal have been made available by the co:npany. Ferodo SM1. is a bronze-based material for oil or dry applications where a fairly high co-efficient of friction is required, and there are not unduly severe energy conditions. Such use might include master, steering and accessory clutches in earthmoving and ordnance equipment.

Grade SM3 contains dry lubricants for the purpose of providing anti-seize and heat-resisting properties. Bronze-based. it is suitable for such heavy-duty dry applications as engine and master clutches on earth-movers.

Brake Testing ABOOKLET entitled Braking Efficiency" has been issued by Ferodo, Ltd., Chapel-en-le-Frith, Stockport. Both theory and practice of vehicle retardation are described, with appropriate emphasis on • the meaning of the co-efficient of friction between road and tyres, and the effects of heat and axle loading. Multi-axled vehicles and those with large loads concentrated away from the centre of the wheelbase pose special problems connectedwith weight transference during braking, it is stated.

Fan:belt Chart A WALL chart listing the vehicles for

which their No-Risk fanbelts are available has been issued by S. Norrish, Ltd.. 220 Great Portland Street, London, W.1. Capacities of cooling systems are also given. (The company sell Syncol anti-freeze.) Austin, Bedford, Comrner, Land-Rover, Morris, Perkins, Reliant, Standard, Thames and Volkswagen engines are among those noted.

Better Atomizing SQTATED to be of particular advantage when fitted to the engines of delivery vans which never warm to normal running temperature, the Mangoletsi re-atomizing inlet manifold is offered by the G.M. Carburetter Co„ Ltd., Malt Street, Knutsford, Cheshire. Units are available for Bedford, B.M.C., Commer, Ford and Standard engines.

The manifold for the Ford 100E engine costs 17 I9s. less ft 15s. refund for the old manifold. The Mangoletsi equipment is basically the standard part incorporating atomizing vcnturis at the inlet and outlet ports, which are centralized and unified in diameter. The bores are machined internally and polished.

Object of the design is to promote the correct mixture of air and petrol vapour, and to deflect the film of petrol from the manifold walls to the centre of the pipe. The unit is simple to fit.

Lamenated Ceilings THE General Electric Co., Ltd., Magnet House, Kingsway, London, W.C.2, and Lumenated Ceilings, Ltd., are to combine their design and development resources to provide a nation-wide service for the marketing and application of lumenated ceilings. An example of the result of the arrangement between the two companies is the 3,500-sq.-ft. ceiling illuminating the new exhibition hall of the British Motor Corporation at Longbridge, Birmingham.

Thine Tape riA BRAND of masking tape suitable for temperatures of up to 150° F. is being sold by Industrial Tapes, Ltd., Speedfix House, 142-146 Old Street, London, E.C.1. Known as Al tape, its special features include resistance to moisture, flexibility; thinness and easy

removal. It is said to be particularly useful in the masking.of curved and con_ toured surfaces, and its thinness lessens the likelihood of paint edges being built up against the edges of the tape.

Third Axles NOW available in kit form so that customers themselves may convert their vehicles, the Primrose third-axle attachment is offered for a wide range of chassis, and no alteration to original design by vehicle manufacturers is involved.

The axle is suspended from a crossmember, which fits into the channels of the frame members, by two coil springs. In addition there are two trailing semielliptic leaf springs and a pair art Wood

head-Monroe shock absorbers. The axle can support 8 tons, and sufficient transverse articulation is given for most normal purposes.

Two-leading-shoe brakes may easily be coupled to the braking system, and the wheels are interchangeable with standard equipment. The distributors, Primrose Third Axle Co., Clitheroe, Lanes, extend a guarantee, and claim that the conversion provides a vehicle with a high degree of tractive effort.

Value in Maps REPRESENTING good value for money and examples of how clarity can be retained with wealth of detail, a series of road maps of Britain has been

prepared for the National Benzole Co., Ltd., Wellington House, Buckingham Gate, London, S.W.1, by George Philip and Son, Ltd. Four sheets cover the whole of England, Scotland and Wales, and there is a separate sheet for London. Each sheet costs Is, and opens to 3 ft, by 1 ft. 11 in.

The maps are obtainable from National Benzole solos filling stations. Except for the London sheet, which gives the Greater London area on one side and the centre of the city on the other, the scale is "five miles to the inch.

Battery Protection rOVERS of rigid moulded composition

for exposed vehicle batteries have been introduced by Chloride Batteries, Ltd., Clifton Junction, Manchester. The three types available are designed to clip on to nine Exide batteries in the standard car and KHV ranges.

They are supplied with rubber bushes and spring clips which grip under the lips of the container, the hatter; itself being retained on the vehicle by. side-clamping devices of standard pattern. The covers are already being supplied with appropriate initial equipment.

Nylon Tubing AN automatic chassis lubricator with nylon tubes may be up to 45 lb. lighter than an installation with metal tubes, and as no preforming is necessary the cost involved in fitting can be cut by half. This is stated by Tecalemit, Ltd.. Plymouth, who have developed 'a range of nylon tubing cheaper than conventional products and stated to be made to standards of accuracy so far unapproached in non-metallic tubing.

Two types of tubing are available, semi-rigid and flexible. The semi-rigid is sold in two grades, high and low pressure, and sizes between in. and I in. outside diameter. The flexible tubes are offered in outside diameters of 3116 in. and 5/16 in. Various fittings are also made for the tubing.
