HUNDREDS OF owner-drivers who deliver quarry products could end up quitting because of the 48-hour working week.

The alarm was raised after the Quarry Products Association (QPA) issued guidance notes to drivers warning that very few of them will be exempt.

Alan McGuiness, who operates two tippers at Tideswell in Derbyshire, says: "My periods of waiting, tipping and loading are totally different to somebody, for example, with a fridge waiting at a local Tesco. I have to work long hours just to be viable."
