FOR NEXT YEAR'S Olympic Games in Moscow, the Russians will put on the road a new fleet of buses to supplement existing transport facilities.
Although most of them will be standard production vehicles — many from the Hungarian lkarus plant — plans to include prototype units incorporating new engine and transmission deveIopments are also going ahead.
One of the most interesting is the design for a three-axle 12metre bus powered by four hub-mounted electric motors fed by a compact gas turbine/ generator set.
Several vehicles of this type are in fact now under construction at the Lvov bus works.
Advantages claimed for the new system include exhaust emission reduced by 50 per cent over diesel engines of similar power ratings and markedly lower noise levels. The 183 kW gas turbine/generator pack weighs 745 kg.
Additional weight savings are achieved through the absence of clutch, mechanical gearbox, propshaft and other driveline components. The infinitely variable electronic speed control for the de motors ensures smooth acceleration.
The new 18-ton gvw 6x4 bus will have a gas turbine of 50,000rpm maximum rating. The shaft-mounted ac generator has breakerless excitation twostage cooling, air and additional liquid system with force-pump circuit also cooling the turbine. Weight of each wheel in the tandem-axle-drive bogie is 350kg. This includes the 35kWdc motor, planetary gears, rim and tyre. Maximum speed of the bus is 75km /h carrying a full 110-passenger load.
