Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

STONEFIELD Vehicles, the Ayrshire-based manufacturer of 4x4 and 6x4 cross-country vehicles, is laying off 40 of its workforce.

Derek White, Stonefield's managing director, said the company was overstaffed in relation to current sales figures. Sales of Stonefields have not risen as quickly as expected and the expansion of the workforce was premature, he said.

Short-time working had been in force since January, but Mr White said it was "completely inappropriate to continue on short-time" and redundancies were agreed. These are being made right across the company and include staff. Some have already left the factory at Cumnock, Ayrshire, and full-time working has been resumed.

In its effort to boost sales, Stonefield — backed by the Scottish Development Agency funds — has appointed Saville of Staines as a main distributor.

Saville will be responsible for sales and service of Stonefield vehicles in the following areas: Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire, Essex, Greater London, Kent, East and West Sussex, Surrey and Cambridgeshire.
