DEVON and Cornwall citizens were warned last week that their lifestyles would be affected adversely if heavy lorries were banned from their counties.
Local Freight Transport Association chairman Richard Sanderson told the annual general meeting at Ivybridge that 85 per cent of all goods were moved by road transport.
He told delegates that it was regrettable that many myths were allowed to surround the lorry and its relation to other road users.
Mr Sanderson pointed out that it had a very good safety record — only 88 were involved in accidents every 100m km. Motor cars, by contrast, are involved in 128 accidents per 100m kilometres.
He concluded by saying that the lorry, whose environmental image, was improving, should be appreciated for the essential fact of life which it has become.
