Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

MUCH time has been spent by Bromilow and Edwards, Ltd., Foundry Street; Bolton, in considering the possibility of giving a more modern appearance to the van-type refuse collector, by the use of streamlined effects. A difficulty arises, becadse many municipalities desire the vehicle to carry four or five loaders, in addition to the driver.

With the orthodox type of cab this, of course, cannot be done, but, by constructing a special cab with a separate compartment behind the driver's section, provision can easily be made for the extra mon. This, naturally, increases the distance from the dashboard to the back of the special cab, and enables the frontal aspect to be improved by sweeping lines.

The company has recently constructed three vehicles incorporating cabs of this description for Rotherham Corporation. The forward part of the cab is of conventional design and the compartment behind it is independent of it, being provided with doors on each side, equipped with drop windows, whilst a ventilator is incorporated. The use of a door on each side makes for easy entry and quick exit of the loaders. The cab roof is given a sweep from the top of the windscreen to the roof level, which is higher than standard, in order to line up with the roof of the refuse body proper. A shelf is fitted over the top of the driving

B30 compartment, so that loaders can stow clothing.

The body itself incorporates the Principality moving floor and is of the rear-loading barrier type; this floor is now manufactured by the Bromilow and Edwards concern. Remote control on the near side of the body is used, so that the operator can discharge the load when standing some 5 ft. or 6 ft. away from the rear and when the latter is over the edge of the tip. .

A spring-actuated self-opening tail door is fitted at the rear and is pivoted near the top of the body. The upper portion of the rear opening is enclosed by a roller shutter and a retractable step is fitted to facilitate easy loading. The body superstructure is of ash with double-armoured plywood on the outside, galvanized steel sheets being used on the inside.

• The body has a smart appearance and is decorated with beading along the sides, which, at the front, lines up with that on the cab, and is swept down behind .the rear wheels to the skirt rail.
