-The Hawk" writing in the September 20 issue of Commercial Motor regarding the supply of horses for the Douglas Corporation Horse Tramway, states that since the tramway first started the horses have always been imported from England. This is incorrect.

Horses for this tramway were supplied, at least, during the period between the two World Wars, by Mr Hugh Ritchie, a horse dealer in my home town in County Down.

Buyers from the Douglas Corporation came to Newtownards each year, and I can Well remember on many occasions, seeing the horses being trotted along a quiet road for inspection purposes.

Sorry to correct The Hawk, but I really could not let this serious error go unchallenged! JOHN McKNIGHT Northern Ireland Carriers Ltd
