Mudholes are out — on the authority of Gerd Hoffmann, m.d. of Mercedes-Benz (UK) Ltd. Without necessarily accepting all the implications of his remarks, I applaud his philosophy about garage workshops. When he opened the new M-B facility of J.G.B. Commercials at Aberdeen just recently, he said it marked the beginning of the end for the "mudhole" philosophy.
He explained: Servicing lorries can be dirty work, but people today are rightly demanding better working environments; their homes are not mudholes, so why should they work in one? "Customers for our type of vehicle expect to deal with nice people in nice surroundings, and this is a very good example of the sort of place we plan to have operating throughout the country before long."
Nice words for J.G.B.'s proprietors, Bill and Hamish Barrack, who formed the company four years ago when they moved out of the haulage business formed by their father in the Twenties.
