THE BRITISH Government should follow the example set by the French Government and save by fuel encouraging the use of retreads, since a lot of oil is used in the manufacture of tyres, the Retread Manufacturers' Association was told at its annual lunch.

P. J. Kent, president, said that the French Government has recognised the importance of the retreading industry in the current oil crisis. It was giving investment assistance to its industry and encouraging efforts to give value for money. An estimated 45,000 tons of oil a year would be saved.

Mr Kent said that British hauliers use one million retreads a year — a help to the economy_ A further help to the economy, he suggested, would be for the Government to take steps to limit the import of tyres from the Eastern Bloc sold at give-away prices.

Brian Kingham, national chairman of the 25,000member Association of Independent Businesses, said five million vehicles were in use in the UK on public service, and the Government should encourage the use of retreads on them.
