HAMBURG's International Transport Show has brought together the latest developments in commercial vehicle and psv design from 11 countries, and there were several notable firsts by German and foreign manufacturers.
Energy recuperation in commercial vehicle operation has now become one of the most important sectors in the research programme sponsored by the German Ministry of Research and Technology and both Daimler-Benz and MAN show some of the work carried out along these lines.
These include a flywheel which can feed energy absorbed in braking into the driveline for accelerating away from stops and DaimlerBenz's first public demonstration of its mechanically-guide 0-Bahn system, with vehicles providing a shuttle for exhibition visitors.
VW showed a totally encapsulated 1300cc engine and the first electrically-driven minibus on an LT chassis as examples of its environmentally oriented development work.
