on the surveys I of transport availability and travel needs in selected rural areas of Britain— first announced by the Ministry of Transport last November—is to begin this
month. The full fieldwork will begin towards the end of March and will be carried out simultaneously in seven areas (one area having been added since the scheme was originally announced).
There will be two surveys in Devonshire, one in Lincolnshire, one in Westmorland, one near Tomintoul, Banffshire, one in Kirkcudbrightshire, and the other in Montgomeryshire. Each survey, which will examine every form of transport in the thinly populated areas concerned is being undertaken by Marplan Ltd., marketing and motivation research specialists, on behalf of the Ministry.
Marplan's general manager, Mr, John Fuller, said this week: "This is probably the largest and most intensive single study ever made of the problems of public and private transport in rural areas."
The research will involve a detailed study of all journeys undertaken by each informant over the seven days prior to interview.
The results are to be in the hands of the Ministry by the end of May.
