DRIVERS AT CHILLED food distribution firm 3663 will pocket nearly £1,000 each this Christmas as a goodwill gesture for giving up an overpayment worth £30 a week.

Agreement was reached after months of wrangling in which the OMB union argued that the overpayment to 200 drivers based at the company's Banbury depot had been negotiated in good faith.

But GMB national officer Jude Brimhle says drivers have now voted by a majority of more than 95% to accept the lump sum and give up the overpayment.

'We didn't want a difficult industrial relations' issue and, at the end of the day, there was goodwill from the company," she adds. "We wanted to find a way through because we want job security. And if the company are paying for something they haven't budgeted for, that could affect job security."

The union says the mistaken payments began in February and arose out of an agreement concerning the WorkingTime Directive.

Some drivers were entitled to three hours' paid break, but the company ended up paying this to every driver.

The lump sum is being given to all the drivers, including those who were not being overpaid.
