PLANS TO ALLOW large shared warehouses to be built throughout Britain have been welcomed by the FTA, which says they are needed for the industry to tackle the "massive" growth in internet and home shopping.

Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott says the green light will be given for shared warehouses tube built around major transport links in places such as the West Midlands and the South-East, to deal with the increasing number of imported goods.

The FTA's Geoff Dossetter says growth in the home shopping sector entails more deliveries into domestic environments: "What is called for is the establishment of hubs for the distribution of small parcels to domestic locations.

"Warehouses are already start to emerge. The establishment of these... is something well have to have in the future."

Prescott's draft guidance note on transport suggests local authorities should think twice before imposing restrictions, such as banning night-time lorry movements because of the effect on the wider economy.

The West Midlands Regional Assembly is already considering plans far up to five regional logistics sites where several huge warehouses would be located side by side along major roads.
