D TRUCK dealers are expressing cauoptimism about sales in 2006. Faced with ew technology associated with Euro-4, not to mention the introduction of smart-card tachographs, many operators will opt for lateregistered Euro-3 trucks rather than buying new, they believe.
-We're already getting one or two used truck orders for next year," says Paul Banks, of Manchester Mercedes dealership TruckWorld." think the demand plus' the shortage of late-plate vehicles will result in prices going up. especially at the start of the year," he adds.
"I reckon 2006 will be OK for used sales, but I think it will be a couple of months into the year before demand really kicks in," says Phil Holmes, of Scarii a dealership Keltruck. -At that point it will become much more evident to hauliers that new Euro-3 trucks will soon no longer be available." Matt Hammond, of Harris Daf, is expecting "a pretty good start to the year, but I'm not sure to what extent that will be down to Euro-4. To be honest, I'm not sure how many of the small hauliers who buy our trucks think that far ahead — although the big companies might well."
"We've been seeing plenty of interest in late-registered CF Space Cab 6x2 tractor units at 430hp, and I think that will continue into the new year,"says Andy Mackay, used truck sales manager at the Manchester branch of Daf dealership Chatfields. "I've got so much confidence in that truck that I'd happily go out and buy five or six of them in one go because I know I'd find customers for them.
He's also looking forward to selling a number of six-month-old, low-mileage. muckawaybodied 310bhp 6x4 CF tippers. "I've got a good source for them — typically they've done no more than 25,000km each."
And Alexander concludes: "The market for multi-axle rigids continues to suffer from extremely limited supply, and accordingly prices at all years are firm."
