I WAS SHOCKED by your report headed "Operator accuses Moto of a 'biased' clamping policy", on the incident in which a driver was caught short on the motorway service area with nowhere to park legitimately, clamped and charged £250 (CM 24 May).
Scotland, with its different legal system, outlawed clamping years ago when a judge called it "extortion"—which is exactly what it is.
An LGV driver cannot control his truck safely if he needs the lavatory, can he? And this country I must he unique in Europe to deny them that basic facility because there is no space on the truck park. On mainland Europe, people park anywhere and everywhere —even on the fuel pumps sometimes — without fear of anyone lurking to punish them and/or their employers.
Also, the haulier in question is Mark Doel, not"Dole"— the name comes from Belgium. Doel is a small village near Antwerp. You see the sign when corning back from Breda (in Holland) where you turn off to use the Kanaldock tunnel which brings you out on the Ghent side near Doe!.
I think Mark was a wholesale butcher once but changed to transport. Bet he wishes he hadn't sometimes...
