Innovative load-restraint system for curtainsiders relies on air bags to stop awkward loads moving about in transit. Dylan Gray reports.

GERMAN TRAILER manufacturer Kogel is launching its new Safebax air-bag curtain at the Transport Logistic trade fair in Munich this week.

The air-bag system is mounted on the inside of the trailer and secures loads that could otherwise be hard to keep in place because they do not meet the standard pallet dimensions.

Once integrated in to the curtain, the air bags create a distance of up to 160mm between the load and the sliding curtain.

The Safebax system comprises 38 polyethylene air bags which are fixed to the curtain using brackets and Velcro fasteners. A compressor fitted in the left rear toolbox is run from a 24V supply which is fitted to the tractor towing the trailer. The whole system weighs approximately 40kg.

Safebax will be available in July as part of the Maxx range. • Kiigel has teamed up with global axle and braking system company ArvinMeritor to manufacture its own Trax axle system; it will debut at the Munich show as part of the Maxx range.

The axle weighs438kg complete with axle supports and brakes.

Innovations includes the 'anticoning' brake disc. To stop cracks forming on the disc, it is designed to expands only radially under the influence of heat.
