Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

should the system be favoured as a means of reducing air pollution?

APetrol injection gives improved mixture

distribution to the cylinders compared with a carburetter, particularly at low r.p.m. As one of the main causes of air pollution is the production of the toxic gas carbon monoxide by a large number of petrol-engined vehicles in congested traffic, the system is generally regarded as a possible answer to the problem in so far as it relates to petrol engines. Because of the difficulty of supplying fuel from a carburetter in the correct metered quantity to each cylinder, one or more of the cylinders is normally supplied with too much fuel at low r.p.rn. to enable the engine to fire on all cylinders, distribution difficulties being exacerbated at reduced air-flow rates by the tendency of the fuel droplets to settle out.

The injector of a petrol-injection system is normally iocated close to the inlet port and the path to the cylinder is very short During cold starts there is a greater tendency for the fuel droplets to settle out and a typical petrolinjection system facilitates cold running without use of the choke. An overall reduction in fuel consumptic i of 10 to 15 per cent has been obtained iry employing the system in addition to an it crease in power output and torque of 15 to 20 per cent.
