Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

ARANGE of eight platform semi-trailers and chassis known as Super Load Teamsters (SLT) has been introduced by York Trailer Co. Ltd. Single-, tandemand three-axle designs suitable for use in outfits from 18 tons to 38 tons g.t.w. are included and they will be manufactured in a newly-constructed flow-line unit at Corby, Northants, alongside the present York W series (15 to 28 tons g.t.w.), and the EP series (24 to 32 tons g.t.w.).

All SL models are available in lengths from 26 ft. to 40 ft. in anticipation of ratification of the proposed 15 in. overall length limit, with a further two models available in 45 ft. and 50 ft. lengths. In addition there is a 32 tons gross tandem-axle model—SL 32—which will work at this weight with a two-axle tractive unit when a 15 m. overall length permits compliance with the 38 ft. outer-axle spread requirement.

For use on the Continent now, and in expectation of a 38 tons gross weight allowance on five axles in the UK ultimately, the SL range features model SL381T. This unit is plated for a gross trailer weight of 32 tons to work with a three-axle tractive unit when the payload will be around 28 tons. York believes this trailer will marry well with tractive units that are beginning to appear plated for this maximum figure.

A design feature of York trailers is castellated main rails which are employed in the SL range except that the castellations in the I-beams now run the full length of the frame. The top flanges of the beams are carried flush with the top of the floor.

The main beams are pierced between the castellations to accommodate full-width cross-members which are positioned at 12 in. centres, and tubular cross-members are fitted above the lower flange of the mainframe at 48 in. centres. A new side rave design is featured in the range. The special rolled section incorporates a triangular section chock rail, to give a greater net platform width. The standard overall width is 7 ft. 11.5 in., and the usable platform width is 7 ft. 10 in.

The braking system employed on the SL is similar to that on the W and EP models except that on the single axle model for 24 tons g.t.w., and the 38 tons gross SL 38rr model, 15.5 in. by 8.25 in. brakes are fitted as against 15.5 in. by 7 in. A multi-pull parking brake is fitted. Running gear again is similar to the W and EP models. A York single-axle assembly fitted on models SL 18, SL 20, and SL 24, and on models SL 30, SL 32, SL 38, SL 38TT, and SL 32/3 (a three-axle trailer)

are all fitted with York TA suspension as standard.

Standard fitting now on these new models are ribbed brake drums, two-piece forged steel hubs, and positive-seal dust covers. The all steel headboard has flanged centre gussets mounted to the main rails to provide a stout barrier to restrain shifting loads. Electrical circuits are protected by thermalreset circuit breakers located in the front-end connector box which is standard equipment The trailer is wired to S.M.M. and T seven-pin system, and on the connector box is an explanatory diagram. Connectors in the box permit any type of lead to be instantly fed into the trailer's circuit, which could be useful on TIR units. Another standard fitting on all SL models is two-speed landing gear which has ratios of 1 to 1, and to 1. A new anti-under-run bumper of tubular construction fitted is designed to give progressively under impact so that shock is to some extent absorbed.

The trailers in the SL range are the SL 18 which is a single-axle model plated for 15 tons gross trailer (18 tons g.t.w.) and allowing a 12 tons payload, and priced at £965, the SL 20, another single-axle trailer plated for 17 tons gross trailer weight (20 tons g.t.w.) with a 14 tons payload, and priced at £973, and the final single-axle model is the SL 24, plated for 19.75 tons gross trailer weight (24 tons g.t.w.) with a 17 tons payload, and priced at £1,038. The SL 30 is a tandem-axle trailer plated for 26 tons gross trailer weight (28/30 tons g.t.w.) with a payload of 20/22 tons, and priced at £1,340, and the SL 32, tandemaxle model is plated for 27 tons gross trailer weight (32 tons g.t.w.) with a 23 ton payload, and priced at £1,397.

The SL 38, built for 30/32 tons g.t.w. is now on four axles, but ready for 38 tons gross on five axles when regulations permit, is priced at £1,495.

The final trailer is a three-axle model, SL 32/3, plated for 27 tons gross trailer weight (32 tons g.t.w.) with a 23 ton payload, and priced at £1,681.

Model SL 38 is-included specifically for later conversion should there be an increase in weights, but in the meantime it will serve as a normal tandem-axle trailer at 30 tons or 32 tons g.t.w. Should the law be changed permitting a higher gross rating, York will convert the trailer from 30 in. kingpin location to 54 in. (for tandem-axle tractive units), and lengthen the platform as required for a fixed price.
