Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

TO AVOID the possibility of failure in a component used in a batch of its Big D fifth wheel couplers, York Trailer Company is replacing 3,000 complete couplers, free of charge to operators. The component in question is the bearing bolt which passes through the rubber bushes around which the top plate of the coupler pivots on the mounting feet. There are two bolts per coupler, one to each foot.

The serial number of an affected coupler will be within D73/96800 to D73/103663 and D74/01 to D74/9478.

An operator having a coupler within this number band will need to make a physical examination to determine whether his unit has welded, instead of the normal one-piece, bearing bolts. On the majority of couplers involved there is a hexagonal set bolt head outside the pivot point. The bearing bolt passes through the pivot point from inside the coupler and is secured by the set bolt. By reaching beneath the ioupler top plate it is easy to feel the head of the bearing bolt. If the head is smooth the coupler is not affected. If the head is recessed the coupler should be changed.

Operators with affected couplers should contact their local York branch quoting the serial number of the coupler and stating a time convenient for coupler replacement.

The welded bolt was fitted at a time when there were supply difficulties. Two York customers have reported cracks in the weld. The cost of the replacement operation is 09,500.
