AN APPLICATION by a bus company on the Outer Hebrides island of Lewis was described as "terrifying" by Mr A. B. Birnie, chairman of the Scottish Traffic Commissioners, at a hearing in Stornoway last week. The 2.ompany, John Mitchell ;Stornoway) Ltd, applied to double the fares on two services and for increases of between 3p and lop on three more routes. A company .official told the hearing that the reason the application was for such high amounts was that the last increase the company had applied for was in September 1970. There were no objections to the application.
Mr Birnie said: "On the face of it this company has for five years been putting up with a staggering loss every year, a loss which amounts to a total of £70,000 or £80,000 in round figures. It is difficult to believe that any firm will stand back and watch that happen. The increases proposed are terrifying.".
He adjourned the case because of insufficient evidence and said that if the required information was not received by November 1 the application would be refused.
