A CIRCULAR letter recently issued by Greater Manchester PTE explains that although bus fares in its area are to be raised from September 15, the 6.7 per cent increase in revenue will still not be enough to cover increasing operating costs.
The PTE claims that the cost per mile of running a bus is now 45p compared to 371/2p per mile last year. An increase of almost 20 per cent.
The figure includes pay increases and additional National Insurance, pensions contributions and other general cost increases common to all other sections of industry.
The Executive is making economies, it says. However, that is not easy as the possibility of reducing services is dismissed. On a long-term basis such a reduction would escalate even further the vicious circle of falling passenger loading and higher fares.
