two lorries for the same company. Last month there was a lack of work and only one of my vehicles could he loaded. The manager of the company asked if would drive an artic for them and this I agreed to do. On the second week of driving, I noticed a crack in the chassis, which I reported. It was supposed to have been repaired that evening hut was not, so I sat at home the .following day.
A load M timber came up lOr one of my vehicles, so I went to deliver-it. The manager rang my home and said the vehicle was repaired and ready.for my use. My wife explained the situation and. said that I would be available the .following morning. When I rang the depot the manager was far from pleased, and since then, when I have phoned for work, I have been completely ignored.
Could I hold them liable for an financial loss that I might sustain?
Ait is difficult to give an opinion without knowing both sides of the argument. However, it does seem, from what you have said, that there has been a lack of understanding and ccimmunication on both sides.
In the first place, although the company concerned seems to have had a regard for your financial position by employing you as a driver during a slack period, it would have been better if you had been informed when you would next be required to drive one of its vehicles.
On the other hand, it might have been advisable for you to ring and check with the company about your next driving job before accepting the work for your own vehicle in view of your commitment to the company.
In the haulage industry, customer relations are all-important and it would appear that the company concerned feels rightly or wrongly that you have let them down. If it does feel that way, it cannot be compelled to use your services and no blame can be attached to them for any subsequent financial difficulty you might encounter.
It is suggested that, if you wish to persuade that company to resume normal business relations, you make a personal_ call upon the manager and, by adopting a conciliatory attitude, try to put the matter int, perspective.
