SAFETY and driver comfort continue to be the main areas in which accessory manufacturers are concentrating their efforts at this year's Commercial Motor Show and in this connection one of the most interesting developments is that of digital instrument displays, incorporating selective functions shown only on the demand of the vehicle driver.

Besides Kysor equipment in the gallery, a coach on the Duple stand will have a unit fitted to it developed by Delphic Ltd and which provides fault indication on a single screen.

Prophets of doom are predicting another ice age so examples from the range of Tropical — Eberspacher heating systems on the Boscombe Engineering stand (no 241) might be particularly welcome! These systems operate independently of the vehicle's engine and can run on either petrol or diesel. Accessories are available so that systems based on air or water heating can be custom-built for all types of heavy goods vehicle, psv, van or caravan.

Freight temperature

Apart from cab heating the heaters can be used to maintain freight compartment temperature to precise levels, while the most recently introduced water heater units can be programmed to pre-heat the engine, deice the windscreen and heat the cab before use.

Of interest to psv operators are two new products being shown by Deans and Lightalloys Ltd (stand 154). The first is the Redro Trifold door — a threewing design of power-operated door in which all three wings fold to one side of the aperture. The second new exhibit will be the Glider door which is a poweroperated door incorporating a device to reverse the closing cycle when the door wing travel is impeded in any way. Other equipment on this stand will include seat frames, parcel rack sections, door locks and emergency door/ window gear.

From Dover Roller Shutters Ltd (stand 203) comes the new Nyloy 150 range of shutters. This is a system based on a 150 mm flat-face box lath, with integral• hinges and nylon wheels running in a heavy, galvanized steel track. Also on the stand will be examples from the company's Nyloy and Nyloy 36 range of shutters and of the Tila continuous hinge system for conventional doors. For securing loads Dover will be showing Bison security equipment designed for loads of up to 2 tons per unit.

This year's Commercial Motor Show will be the first time the range of engine fans has been exhibited from Dynair Ltd (stand 212A). These fans are of failsafe design, are pneumatically operated and are controlled by a coolant temperature-sensing device. The fan itself is mounted either on the engine crankshaft, or for under-floor applications, on a layshaft.

The fan operates only when the running temperature exceeds the optimum level, usually about five per cent of the time, and so significant savings in fuel consumption can result. The units are approved by Rolls-Royce, Bedford and Cummins.

Tanker operators should be interested in the new range of lowprofile manhole covers on the Emco Wheaton Lid stand (no 223). The new design replaces one that has been manufactured for the past 20 years. Increased strength is provided together with additional safety features in the covei arm and locking areas, while venting ha been improved to meet anticipatec changes in regulations for carryini petroleum spirits. The covers are built tc metric dimensions but are interchange. able with previous models.

Capstan and drum winches ar( featured by Fairey Winches Ltd (stanc 209) for Land and Range Rovers. Lint pull capacities range from 1,406 kg (3,100 lbf) to 2,268 kgf (5,0001b0. Als( being exhibited will be an overdrive uni to suit all Land-Rovers, which provide! fourth gear high ratio of 4.255:1 insteac of the standard 5.4:1. Fuel tanks

On the stand of Hatcher Components Ltd (stand 288) will be auxiliary fuel tanks, made from grp. These tanks, which take the place, of a tractive unit's cat walk, provide up to a 1,000-mile range without the need for refuelling. Also on the stand will be a mini-bus destination indicator and sign and a quick-change roof sign for vans.

A variety of automatic chassis lubrication systems will be shown by Interlube Systems Ltd (stand 215), but the most interesting single development is a device which will permit the use of speedometer controlled systems when a tachograph is also fitted. The device is in fact a triplex adapter box which is connected to the speedometer take-off point. The tachograph cable is connected to one outlet and sealed, while the air control unit of the lubrication system is fitted to the other outlet. Also on the stand will be established Airdromic Mark 3 system, which is suitable for all large c'ommercial and public service vehicles and the ACL system, consisting of a gearbox driven pump unit connected to a ring main.

For trailers there is the ITL system, which operates by deflection of the vehicle's suspension.

Two full-scale working demonstration units will be features of the stand of Joloda Transport Equipment Ltd 251). One, showing the company's heavy pallet loading system fitted to the latest refrigerated vehicle of the United Yeast Company — a Commer G13. The other demonstration unit will be showing Joloda's extending hydraulic 10-ton fork-lift roller conveyor with removable extending tracks. This equipment takes the place of a fork-lift truck or conventional crane and should be particularly useful when loading or unloading ISO containers. Several examples of heating systems are being exhibited by KL Automotive Products Ltd (stand 168), ranging from underseat and twin-blower ducted units to multi-outlet and ducted-system units as fitted to Foden S80 and S90 vabs. In addition, there will be fans for roof mounting, adjustable air distributors and an automatic diverter valve.

KL's most recent introduction is a double-jointed interior sunvisor of tinted Perspex. Its D-shaped cadmiumplated hinge-bar is clamped in a mounting bracket, so that resistance to rotation can be adjusted by turning a knurled screw.

Being shown for the first time in Europe is a new instrumentation system developed by Kysor Industrial Ltd (stand 169). The new system, called the Kygard, replaces conventional dial-type gauges with digital display panels. Solid-state electronic components replace the normal mechanical and electro-mechanical devices thus eliminating much of the wiring behind the instrument panel. Continuous display is provided for engine rpm, road speed, air pressure and odometer reading, while other information is provided on a selective basis. By pressing a particular button the driver can select any one of a number of functions, which will then be displayed. If a critical condition arises in another function the system overrides the driver's selection and displays the critical function.

Also on display will be a selection of Kysor automatic radiator shutters, engine protection equipment and cab air conditioners.

Features on the Joseph Lucas Ltd stand (Nos 184-7) will be a combined diesel fuel shut-off and engine exhaust brake control designed to meet ECE anti-theft requirements. This is believed to be a world first for the combined application. The system's first application is as an optional extra on some vehicles of the new Bedford T M range. The new Bedford range will also be the first vehicles to be available with the Lucas wash/ wipe system designed for a cluster of 4 x 7 in headlamps.

Lucas now provides complete generating systems for vehicles ranging from 3 to 48 tons. Many of these systems feature in-built rectification and micro-circuit regulators. Fully transistorized flasher units, in 12 V and 24V versions, for rigid or artic vehicles will be on display as will a 24V inverter for driving 40W and 8W flourescent lamps for psv and commercial vehicle applications.

Condition monitoring

A vehicle condition monitoring system, which gives an instant check of the vehicle's condition on driver exchange, is also being shown. The system indicates a variety of faults by illuminating a display and by giving an additional audable warning for serious faults. The system operates by accepting signals from sensors and these signals are then passed to the display unit. Breakdown of air and oil pressure, and lack of brake fluid, oil or coolant are all included in the display.

A range of auxiliary and replacement lamps, which are widely supplied as original equipment in France, will be shown by Marchal Distributors Ltd (stand 230). Top of the range of quartz halogen replacement headlamps is the 7in Amplilux. This lamp has two separate reflectors, each with its own bulb, for dipped and main beam. Less expensive is the 7in H4 lamp, using a twin-filament bulb, which can accommodate a separate pilot bulb as a sidelight. The tungsten filament Optique range is shown in 7in and 53% in sizes. The 7in version has provision for a simple change from left to right-hand dip.

A full range of vehicle badges, window stickers, advertising badges and key rings will be shown on the stand of I. Markovits Ltd (stand 171).
