MAKING a surprise appearance at the NEC next week will be the Subaru 1600 fourwheel-drive pick-up truck.
Mounted above the Subaru car stand, the pick-up has mechanical details similar to those of the cars.
A four-cylinder, horizontally-opposed 1600cc engine, built mostly from aluminium alloy, is mounted ahead of the front wheels, with the gearbox and final drive located above the front axle.
An oversquare design is employed for the engine and it has a compression ratio of 8.5 to 1.
Independent suspension all round is a feature of the Subaru design, with McPherson struts at the front and trailing arms at the rear. Servo assisted brakes with discs at the front and drum rear, are another feature.
Interior cab comfort is said to be car-like, with reclining front seats. Overall length of the Subaru is 4.1m (13.7ft). Although it has a good ground clearance, its approach and departure angles are fairly low at 28° and 291/20 respectively.
